RIP Marin Mazzie
Sep. 13th, 2018 02:07 pmI have another post in progress, but I just heard that Marin Mazzie has died; I know her best from Sondheim's Passion, but she had a rich and varied career as a performer. I am not sad in the personal way, but I feel deeply for those who have lost her, and I regret for myself that I will not hear more of her voice or have the chance to see her perform live someday.
Passion is so much all of a piece that it is hard to take any one song out of it, but this is the opening number, featuring her and Jere Shea singing about their perfect "Happiness" on a talk show. I also found her performing with Shea and Donna Murphy during the 1994 Tony awards.
Her character in Passion is very feminine and Mazzie styled her singing to suit it, so it is something else to hear her live performance of "I'm Still Here" -- and bittersweet, now that she is not. The sound quality is not very good, it was clearly recorded live by someone on their phone, but I enjoyed it too much not to share.
She performed in many shows which are not by Sondheim as well, but I am not well enough informed to select any. YouTube awaits the curious.
