Our daughter is home sick today, so I am lying in bed with my laptop in earshot of her, with my one-eyed cat curled up against my legs, instead of volunteering for my son's kindergarten class or running errands or any of the other things I had lined up today. Yesterday I had a bit of a meltdown about not getting through my to-do list, but today I am enjoying the opportunity to slow down. It is a tricky balance; I tend to want to spend my days at a very leisurely pace, but if I do so I find that my energy wanes and I tend to freeze up. It's so easy to go the other direction, though, and end up running full tilt for days on end without stopping to breathe, after which I am exhausted and cranky and even more inclined to just lie down for a week. So -- balance.

Back from the doctor; smol daughter probably does not have strep throat, for which I am glad. On the way to and from the doctor we listened to the Steven Universe soundtrack at her request and discussed various aspects of the show -- Steven's friendship with Connie, how Connie has grown as a character, what Pearl had in mind during one of her big songs. I anticipated all sorts of joys in having children, but sharing a fandom was not one of them and it is a delight.
Soon it will be time to fetch son from school, but for the moment I am enjoying another brief laptop respite and reading this excellent profile of Michelle Yeoh whose work I have been fond of since I began watching Hong Kong action movies in the mid-90s. I am really looking forward to seeing her in Crazy Rich Asians when I can make it out to the theatre -- or when it comes to the internet, I suppose.
