If I counted correctly, which is uncertain given I had only 4 hours of sleep last night, it comes to 35 books read, 25 authors who I've read a different work by, and 3 I did not finish -- which leaves 37 I have not interacted with at all, although many of those 37 are already on my infinite TBR.

The ones I am most surprised not to have read anything by are Vonda McIntyre and Pat Murphy -- their names and titles are so familiar to me I was sure I had read them at some point, but no, they have just been on my shelves for a very long time.

I've only read a couple of Vonda McIntyre's stories -- the novel listed here, and a short story in an anthology years ago -- but I'd be interested in your thoughts on her work, or maybe I mean that I think you might find her work interesting, because what I've read of hers reminds me of a certain flavor of fanfic. (Which you may or may not have encountered in your own reading!) I'm not sure how to describe it, but I feel like she... tries to create in fiction the kind of world she would like to live in, or would like our world's future to hold? Of course I have no idea if that's actually her intent, but it's the sense I get, and I rarely get the same sense of determined optimism in other traditionally published stories.

Aww, I hope it's interesting! I've read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, but not yet its sequel, so now you've raised my interest in that! I want to say that Small, Angry Planet held more of a feeling of struggle for me than Dreamsnake did, but it's been some time since I read the latter, and I may not be remembering everything.

Incidentally, talking about differences and similarities between Chambers and McIntyre makes me think of Joan Slonczewski, also on this list. I would say that her layered worldbuilding puts her closer to Chambers, but her protagonists feel a little more like McIntyre's in their demeanor. But then, I've only read a fraction of their output, so this is based on very limited samples!

I'm curious about what I'll think of A Closed and Common Orbit too! I'll try to remember to send you a note and/or make a post whenever I get around to picking it up.

And, Joan D Vinge! I've only read a handful of her books, but I tended to really enjoy them, so maybe I should read some more. Come to think of it, my favorites by her remind me a little of another flavor of fanfic -- namely, hurt/comfort. (Clearly I should henceforth categorize all authors by which fannish sensibilities their work most demonstrates. Whether or not it's useful, it's certainly fun!)
